Thematic Reading Scheme

The major premise of this state of the art paper and teaching unit is a reaffirmation of the concept that skill and interest in reading are interdependent and inseparable and neither goal is reached unless both are pursued simultaneously. An attempt will be made to identify some of the problems of current reading programs and suggest productive methods and program for the teacher as the pupils build together the habits, skills and arts of reading required of the informed, knowledgeable, and contributing adult citizen. This project, consisting of specific lessons using the thematic approach, is designed to offer another way for helping young people become mature readers. This study consists of seven parts. Chapter I identifies some of the problems involved in current reading programs, examines some particular methods of teaching reading, explains their advantages and disadvantages and describes the forces and factors that influence the reader and the understandings required of the person who guides the young reader. Chapter II describes the thematic approach as a directive approach to reading guidance. Chapter III explains how the thematic program meets the need of interdependency of skill and interest in reading. Chapter IV describes plans for teaching young people to read critically, to acquire and use information and knowledge, to build values, appreciations and those related skills that promote lasting habits of reading and reflection. Chapter IV will also attempt tao resolve the implications that the thematic approach of teaching reading will increase skill and interest in reading. chapter V includes guidelines for other teachers to implement their programs. Chapter VI will include a final summary of the thematic approach and a brief rational for selection. Specific lesson of instruction will be included at the conclusion of this study. Chapter VII, as a final conclusion, results examination of the expectations and functions of education.
